This essay concerns Nicholas J. Roosevelt (1767-1854) of New York, an inventor who collaborated with Robert Fulton and Robert R. Livingston in the development of steamboats. In 1811, he built and sailed the "New Orleans," the first steamboat on the western rivers, which sailed from Pittsburgh to New Orleans.

The New Orleans, the first steamboat to navigate western waters, sailed from Pittsburgh bound for New Orleans in 1811.
